Cardiac Care in Canada’s Healthcare System

Coronary artery disease is a leading cause of death in Canada. Heart disease is treated with medication, angioplasty, stenting and/or surgery (for example, bypass surgery and valve surgery). Cardiac catheterization is used in the diagnosis of patients' cardiac condition. Prevention of heart disease or its recurrence is the goal of cardiac rehabilitation.

In Canada, universal healthcare system funding of cardiac services is centrally determined and allocated by the provinces. In Ontario, CCN was established as a partnership between government, doctors and hospitals providing advanced cardiac care, for purposes of planning, coordinating and monitoring the provision of services.
